Having trouble accessing Vista Control Panel?

I've seen quite a few threads on the web about this issue. The Control Panel in Vista refuses to open (and also other stuff like properties for the network, personalize desktop and so on). On my system even FAH SMP stopped after finished uploading completed WUs (just sat there for hours doing nothing). The temp solution was to restart the Software Licensing service, but on a busy day I had to do this several times.
The fix for me was to disable the Windows Update service. It has been 5 days now without issues. Windows Update even seems to work as normal, it just downloaded a definition update for Windows Defender, and even though startup is disabled, I get this:
The service still start when needed, and even though it keeps running after it's done updating, the bug doesn't seem to reappear. I'm using the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" setting though, so I can't say for sure it will work for the recommended "Install updates automatically" setting. Just something you might want to try if you have this problem.
