Cisco invests in VMWare

Cisco Systems, the Atlas of the internet, has plopped down $150 million USD in crisp greenbacks for 1.6% of VMWare. The investment is rather large for such a small percentage, but today's datacenter requires more virtualization and condensation of goods than ever before. In that sense it seems a wiser idea for Cisco to hop on board now before the virtu-train pulls away from the station and leaves Cisco kicking around for itself.
VMWare itself, purchased by EMC for $625m USD in 2004 is now worth just shy of $10bn USD and is the lord of the manor when it comes to running multiple operating systems smoothly and efficiently. Tying into Intel's Vanderpool and similar technology, the thought of running multiple OSes/services to clients via a scant few boxen is not only increasing appealing, but increasingly snappy.
We'll keep you posted down the line; surely something will come of this.
