HijackThis Log

Hello. It has been a while since I have been on here. I typed in short-media.com and it went to here, but my user name and password still work. I wasn't here when the site changed. I did all the steps (1-8) before running the HijackThis program. I used to get a strange popup at start up saying that the ISMModule.exe couldn't run or something. However, after restarting a few times during the antivirus/spyware steps it seemed to stop giving me that popup. I did find an ISM folder in my C drive program files. What exactly is ISM anyway? It is in the HijackThis log too. I ran the ATF Cleaner and then Ad-Aware, then restarted. Ran Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Panda Active Online Scanner, AVG Antivirus and have all the updates. I don't have the Service Pack 2 because it disables some of my utilities. It also disables my soundcard. For some reason it won't work with Yamaha sound cards. I do have the service pack 1 though. I ran HijackThis.

Here is the log...

I haven't been having any real bad problems other than the odd popup. I did delete some entries in my C drive folder and the ISM popup hasn't come up since I did the 8 steps. However, I would still like to know if there is anything I should get rid of. Will you please tell me what is bad or harmful in my log. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the dealy in responding. We get overladen with requests for help from time to time.

Not looking too bad although no Service Pack is appearing in your HJT log headers.

Just make sure I'd recommend you try installing SP1a from here till you can work out why you can't use SP2 .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

    ************

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove/uninstall the following program IF it's present ...

    ISM

    ************

    Note the following ....

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs > ZTGServerswitch is part of Sony's Vaio support agent designed by Support.com. It's not required if you don't wish to use the Vaio support agent. It's considered to be spyware. I've included it in the fix below but please leave it alone if you definitely want to keep it.

    ************

Open HJT again and click on Scan ... put a tick/check mark next to these entries IF they are still present ....

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISMModule] "C:\Program Files\ISM\ISMModule.exe"

    O16 - DPF: {DD8C9372-35FD-4F7D-8CE4-909ABCFAB2C5} -
    ms-its:mhtml:file://c:\\nores.mht!http://adxtnet.net/code/chm/xpre.chm::/xpreload.ocx

Remember to close ALL open browser windows – including this one – before clicking on “Fix Checked” at the foot of the HijackThis window.

    ************

Delete these two folders in BOLD (bearing in mind my remark above about ZTgServerSwitch) ....

    c:\program files\support.com

    C:\Program Files\ISM

    ************

    Empty your recycle bin.

    ************

Reboot your machine into normal mode and download/install Superantispyware from here .....

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

Scan your system with it and let if fix what it finds.

Post a fresh HJT log with an update on how your computer is operating now.

I am glad that you responded. I understand that lots of people have problems that are much worse than what mine has. I don't have the ISM anymore. I did the 8 steps sticky before posting and it seemed to get rid of everything that I had including the ISM. I have not had pop-ups since the 8 steps or even automatic downloads that you get just from going to a webpage. The automatic updates always come through when I redo the whole computer and use the install discs. However, I have never been prompted to get the Service Pack 1. The Service Pack 2 comes through, but I never download it. That is because it disables my soundcard completely. When I first got this laptop I did download SP2 and afterwards there was no sound. I couldn't listen to music or anything. My soundcard is a Yamaha and I have read that SP2 isn't compatible with them for some reason. Do you know of any version of SP2 and SP1 that will not disable my Yamaha soundcard?

I forgot to give my hijackthis log. I did find the ISM again although it is not giving me pop-ups like it was when I first got it. Also, ISM is not present in my add or remove programs list. My computer is working great. I have had no pop-ups or anything. Zone Alarm has stopped all outside entries. I've got the Super Antispyware firewall up.

Can you download/install SP1a? You should check with Yamaha why SP2 won't work with your soundcard.

The HJT you are using is slightly out of date. The program has been acquired by Trend Micro and is up to version 2.

    Go here ….

    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download

Click on “Download HijackThis Executable” ….

Click “Accept” on the Terms ….

From the menu click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile".

DO NOT choose to upload the scan report to Trend Micro.

Copy and paste any HJT logfiles to this thread, as usual.

    *************

You say you haven't got ISM in your Add/Remove Programs but the run key is here in the log ....

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISMModule] "C:\Program Files\ISM\ISMModule.exe"

Open HJT ... click on 'Do a System Scan Only'... put a tick/check mark next to that entry IF still present.

Remember to close ALL open browser windows – including this one – before clicking on “Fix Checked” at the foot of the HijackThis window.

    *******************

Go to this folder in BOLD and delete it…..

    C:\Program Files\ISM

    *******************

    Empty your recycle bin.

    *******************

You seems to have more than one antivirus and one firewall on your system.nono.gif

Please note that this is dangerous. They could easily conflict with each other and maybe cancel each other out.

Make sure you have only the one AV and one F/W in operation at any one time.

    *******************

Multiple other protection programs are OK ... for example anti-spyware programs.

Once you have finished this post, and if all is well with you now, then you are clear to go, remembering my earlier remarks about ZTgServerSwitch and getting your Service Packs up to date. thumbup.gif

    Cheers.

I noticed that ISM was in the last scan, but the folder was not in my C:/programs. It isn't now either and I did not see it in the scan. I did download the newer version of HijackThis. Which firewall/antivirus do you recommended from the ones I've got?

I had been getting something called werweb.exe popping up and trying to access the internet for a little while. ZoneAlarm would always stop it though. I did a search for werweb and a few entries came up. Some in the Prefetch folder and one in the System32 folder. I was able to delete the .exe files, but I could not delete the werweb.dll file. I have had no problems with it, but don't necessarily want it. Will you tell me what this is? I have scanned it with AVG, but it shows nothing bad about it.

Log is clean except for this entry to be fixed from an HJT scan .....

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {55431DD1-8795-4AF3-8FA0-D645DF7910D4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\werwec.dll

Remember to close ALL open browser windows – including this one – before clicking on “Fix Checked” at the foot of the HijackThis window.

    ************

As to which AV & F/W you should be using I find the the Zone Alarm firewall + AVG antivirus combination to be fine. As they are both on your system I recommend you update AVG to the latest definitions, make sure they are both up to date & active ONLY THEN disable/uninstall other AV and F/W apps.

    ************

Your werweb attack is not uncommon and it sounds as if ZA has been doing its job and blocking it. It's not running on your system as this entry (amongst others) is missing from your HJT log ....

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\werweb.dll

Go to your system32 folder and tell me exactly what you find for werweb.

Whatever you find will probably need to be deleted but I want to hear more from you first.

    ************

As you are also finding traces of werweb in your prefetch folder run Ccleaner to fix it.

Get Ccleaner here but ensure you install it WITHOUT the optional Yahoo Toolbar download (you must untick/uncheck the relevant box on download) …

    http://www.ccleaner.com/

Run it on the default options but check to make sure that the prefetch folder it ticked to be cleaned out.

    ************

When done reboot your system to normal mode, post a fresh HJT log and let me know what you found for werweb.

I deleted the BHO entry in HJT. I ran the Ccleaner too. The werweb has not reared it's head although there is still one entry for it. I have gotten a couple of prompts for werwec.exe and werwed.exe though. I found these files in the system32 folder "werweb_sc, werwec_sc, werwec_unknown, werwed, werwed.dll, and werwed_unknown. What are these? Werweb and werwec have a couple of entries in my Prefetch folder too still (7 total). Should I go in and delete them all then run the Ccleaner again as well as another HJT?

Actually there is one issue I didn't pick up earlier. Sorry.

You have an unpatched system. No Service Packs.

Excuse me for asking but this is an important question ... Do you have a pirate copy of XP or is it a genuine one?

If genuine then update your system to Service Pack 1a from here ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

Choose the 'Network Installation' link to download the standalone version. Save it to your desktop and then double click the file to begin the installation.

    ******************

Open your Task manager (hit ctrl + alt + del together), click on Processes then click on this Process once to highlight it if it's still running ....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\freecell.exe

Now click on End Process at the foot of the Task Manager window.

    ******************

Next fix this entry with HJT if it still remains ...

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C5409798-47E6-412E-B1E6-0769BCE5B3E3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\werwed.dll

    ******************

Find these files and delete them ...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\freecell.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\werwed.dll

    ******************

    Empty your recycle bin.

    ******************

Go to your prefetch folder and delete all that's in it but NOT the folder itself.

Post a fresh HJT log with an update on how things are going now.

Yes I do have a genuine copy of XP. I sent an email to Microsoft about the compatability of SP1 and SP2 with Yamaha soundcards. Right now I have no way to back up my files on here as my Maxtor is having problems too. I don't want to have to re-install all of the software if the sound gets disabled. Microsoft has not responded yet, but I will check my email regularly. I don't understand about the freecell part. I did run the Task Manager, but it was not in there. I do have the game freecell, but that gets installed with the main discs. I tried to delete the werwed.dll from the system32 folder, but it would not let me. I did delete all the files in Prefetch though.

    Nothing dreadful in the log.

Just make sure you have only ONE firewall and ONE antivirus in operation at any one time. Running two or more of either has the potential to cause system conflicts and more trouble. I mention this as I see you have Zone Alarm, AVG and Pc-cillin on the system. I believe not all are running together but you need to remember this.

PrevX should remove that werwed.dll file and related malware. Get it here .....

    http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq821b102732708-WERW43499250/WERWED.DLL.html

I see you have other troubles but I must stress you are open to all kinds of infections without the service packs installed.

Another warning here ....DO NOT install SP2 on any computer that is thought to be infected with malware. It won't install properly and could cause yet more trouble.

SP1a is fine on infected systems so, depending on what you get from MS on the issues, install that one first.

When your system is free of malware THEN you can upgrade to SP2.

Post a fresh HJT log after the PrevX scan and let us know how things are going.

OK, I ran the Prevx and it found some things. I got rid of what it found then it rebooted my system. Upon rebooting it ran the program scan and I went in and was able to delete all the werweb, werwec and werwed entries that I could find in my Prefetch and system32 folders.

    Here is the HJT log:

    Hi

The log is clean except ....

    >> again I remind you that you have NO Service Packs. You must sort this out. Either get SP1a or SP2. As you are you are open to malware infections. Maybe if you can't sort this out with Yamaha get a new soundcard.

    >> your log shows indications of you having more than one antivirus. Make sure you only have ONE antivirus and ONE firewall running at any one time.

Providing you have no more troubles, and once you have resolved these two issues, you should be clear to go.

    Safe surfing.

Thank you musicman. I will check on the SP1 and SP2's compatibility. I'm not sure if you can change out soundcards in laptops can you? I will remove the PCcillin shortly. I have not seen the werweb, werwec or werwed entries for a few days now in Prefetch or system32.

Glad to hear the absence of werweb et al continues but I'm afraid you are likely to have trouble removing/uninstalling Pc-Cillin 2000. It's going to be a nightmare.

You may just decide to leave it on your system but make sure it's wholly inactive.

On the sound card I'm OK with hardware on a desktop but not laptops.

From what little I know you may be right depending on what sort of sound card you have. If it's integral to the motherboard you would have to replace the whole thing. Maybe you have a slot to change the card or you could perhaps use an external card or try something like this ....

Sorry I couldn't be or more use there.

You could post this question in the hardware forum which would have more expertise ....

    Best wishes.

I believe my Yamaha soundcard is integrated onto the motherboard. I have never had my laptop opened up so I can't say for certain though. There aren't any slots around the laptop to get to the soundcard though so I don't believe it can be removed and switched out. I will look into that Sound Blaster though. That would allow me to install SP1 and SP2. My laptop is a few years old now though. I will be in the market for another in the future. Mine only has 30GB of memory. I know that most of the new ones have at least 80GB to start with. Plus, new ones should already have SP1 and SP2 on them I think. Thanks for all your help.
