Read-only issues; perhaps virus or trojan?

I am posting on this forum to try and discover if a problem I am having is a trojan or a virus because I can't figure out what else it might be. If there is a simple solution, please provide it.

Problem: All of my folders have the "read-only" attribute selected. I have attempted to deselect them, and can do so, but upon closing the window (after clicking apply, and then ok), opening it back up reveals it checked again.

Details: I run Windows XP. I am the administrator and have full ownership and control under the security functions. I am setup as an NTFS.

Attempted Solution: I have perused other documentation of similar problems. One viable solution was to visit a Microsoft article that detailed this problem. Their recommendation was to remedy the problems via the Command Prompt using the "attrib" function. I used this, was successfully able to change other attributes of the folders and the files, but was unable to remove the "read-only" attribute.

Other Information: I have run the Mcafee Stinger and found nothing and have run the Hijack This program and found nothing suspicious. However, if those who are more familiar with the Hijack This logs would like to see it, feel free to ask and I will post the log.

Suggested course of action?
