Variety.com reports that the movie rights to Dreamcatcher's "Painkiller", a first person shooter set in the Limbo between Heaven and Hell, have been acquired by the production company Guy Walks Into a Bar.

Painkiller was a pretty under-appreciated game in many circles. While the hype surrounding Doom III was building to astonishing proportions, many happy gamers discovered the gem that is Painkiller. In almost all ways, the game was superior to Doom III (Better graphics, excellent story, and an astonishing amount of variety in both scenarios and weapons), but was overshadowed by the star power attached to the Martian terror epic. There were many</a> high</a> opinions</a> of the game on our forums at the time.

Now of course, we get to see whether Painkiller (Tentatively titled, "Heaven's Got a Hitman") gets the pathetic "groan" treatment that games like Resident Evil and Doom got, or if they'll pull another Silent Hill and make a good movie out of a great game.

Here's to hoping!
