No taskbar, no icons, same in safe mode

edited September 2007 in Spyware & Virus Removal
XP Pro, administrator logon, no taskbar, no icons, same in safe mode. All rest works. Did ATF-clean, ran SuperAntiSpyware. Nothing found. Also ran NOD32. Same. Checked registry for shell = explorer.exe. No change. Can do Ctrl-Alt-Del and get to command prompt. Running Explorer, no change.
Ran SCF /scannow. Did "upgrade" XP install. No change. Here is an HJT log. Any hope of getting the desktop back?

    Hi john11,

    And welcome to icrontic.

    Step 1 - Getting a Firewall!

    If you do not have a software Firewall on your computer, please download one of the following - they are Free!.

    Comodo
    Zone Alarm
    Sunbelt Kerio PF
    Outpost Firewall

    Firewalls provide protection against outside attackers by shielding your computer or network from malicious or unnecessary Internet traffic.

    We do not recommend using Microsoft's built-in Firewall in XP SP2 as it only blocks incoming traffic and not outgoing.
    This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at any time.

    =====

    Step 2 - Getting an Anti-Virus program!

    Just like a Firewall is important for blocking malicious and unnecessary traffic, an Anti-Virus program is important for detecting and removing Viruses, Trojans and Worms.

    If you do not have an Anti-Virus program or your current subscription has run out, then we at Icrontic recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus, which is one of the better paid Anti-Virus programs out there today.

    However, if you do not wish to pay for an Anti-Virus program, there are free ones available. Please choose one Free Anti-Virus program below:

    AntiVir
    AVG Free Edition
    avast! 4 Home Edition

    =====

    Step 3 -

    Copy all text in box below to notepad :
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartMenu\Documents]
    "Text"="Recent Documents Menu"
    "Type"="group"
    "Bitmap"="C:\\windows\\system\\shell32.dll,21"
    "HelpID"="iexplore.hlp#50041"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartMenu\Documents\Documents]
    "RegPath"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer"
    "Text"="Hide Documents Menu"

    "ValueName"="NoRecentDocsMenu"
    "HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001
    ;"HelpID"="iexplore.hlp#50107"

    "RegPath"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer"
    "Text"="Don't Add to Documents Menu"
    "Type"="checkbox"

    "UncheckedValue"=dword:00000000
    "DefaultValue"=dword:00000000
    "ValueName"="NoRecentDocsHistory"
    "HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001
    ;"HelpID"="iexplore.hlp#50107"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartMenu\Documents\ClearDocs]
    "RegPath"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer"
    "Text"="Clear Documents Menu on Exit"

    We get at least one of these a day in the shop...

    Box boots, the Desktop picture loads, but no icons or taskbar etc... if you kill explorer.exe from taskmanager and relaunch it, you will see a very brief flash of icons etc... then blank again.

    "Google Desktop" (pronounced TRASH) has barfed. You have to run the Google Desktop Installer from the taskmanager and use it to uninstall itself if possible, or worst case you just reinstall it then uninstall it.

    All comes back tickety boo.

    P.S. While your at it give all those "ToolBars" the boot too...

    Hi,

    Sorry, it's very hard to understand what you write, because I'm from finland.

    Can you use easier words :D

    How about if you remove whole Google desktop ? I know that it slows comp.

    Sorry Nuppi;

    What I have found is that Google Desktop can become corrupt and cause the Desktop icons & Taskbar not to display on the screen.

    Google Desktop will sometimes not uninstall in this circumstance, or you can not get to Add/Remove Programs to remove it.

    What I do to fix it is reinstall Google Desktop and reboot, the Desktop should at that point be working properly again.

    Then I remove Google Desktop with Add/Remove Programs for good.

    I have seen Google Desktop do this on many computers, and it seemed to me that his problem was related.
