Safe Mode Fails BUT XP boots up

edited September 2007 in Science & Tech
Hi to ALL..
I'm running XP Pro, Which boots up and runs fine,
BUT I wanted to uninstall a dodgey program in Safe Mode.. Hence booting the the pressing F8 and all that..
It started to load some of the drivers then Blue Sceen, and hangs up..
Any idea's on repairing Safe Mode would be appreciated, EXCEPT a complete reinstall :)

Outside of fixing it. Why would you want to install a dodgey program into safe mode? Safe Mode isn't a protected mode it's just a base layer mode without extras. It's the place you try and load into when booting into windows fails.

Installing a program into safe mode should only be done if the program is crashing while trying to install it into windows normally and it's a utility style program you need to fix something.

As for fixing it do an SFC /scannow to make sure all your files are correct. Usually if it's failing in safemode that means you've got some oddball hardware that is being booted with a 3rd party driver that safe mode doesn't consider critical. I have a whole other rant on that type of hardware if you want to hear it.

But the base line is if the SFC doesn't turn anything up you need to strip any extra hardware/drivers off your machine to try and figure out what's causing it to fail. From personal reference I've found that scanners, printers, memory card readers and TV capture cards can cause this problem.

The registry might be messed up. Try this:
    • Download avz4en.zip
    • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
    • Double click on AVZ.exe
    • Click on the file tab and then click on System recovery.
    • Put a checkmark next to Restore SafeBoot registry keys.
    • Click on Execute selected operations.
Let me know if this lets you boot into safe mode.

    On the BLUE SCREEN is : IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ??? :)

Ah, you should have said. I'm not sure what the error means, but I'm sure others do.

In addition to that message there should be an error code on the screen in this format: 0x00000000

Would you be able to tell us the code?
