File un-encrypton problem XP Pro

I have several files that I encryped they are drive image 7.0 backup files of my system.

I encrypted them and now I need to get to them but powerquest borwser won't read them and I can not remove/uncheck the encrypt contents box in the advanced properties.

I have logged in both as the id that did the encrypting and as the admin... nothing has worked.

I can't seem to find anything in the MS KB.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

    have you run chkdsk?

    chkdsk /r x:

x: being the drive letter. If it's the C: drive, it'll tell you it can't check it until a reboot.

Weird that you can't unencrypt using an admin account. Was the computer ever (or is it currently) joined to a domain?

    I haven't done that yet.

I know I thought that it was weird too...

No as far as I know it's not... I never made it one but this is the rig that had the trojan on it along with something else I think...

Ever since I imaged over the c drive to a new drive and then converted my raid form dynamic disks to basics the os has gotten unstable.

I don't know if all that caused the problem or it was a bug...

All's I know now is that if I try to run dreamweaver or a game after the rig has been up for a few days it blue screens and does a memory dump...

After that it will boot and be fine for lite stuff, although folding 4 clients has never crashed it...

You might remember that I lost one of my wd's on my raid 0 a few weeks ago and I was able to restore back the information on the one good drive, I hadn't out grown it yet thank god...

    I don't know...

But I am going to do a reinstall and start over. But I had done a back up a while back that I wanted to use to get some of the more obscure files from later like my desktop.ini file and some bmps that I might have over looked in trying to more stuff over to a free drive for later... But I enycrypted the backups because I wanted to be more secure... but now the encryption can't be removed. Oh and by the way they won't move, copy or delete either...

sounds like bad sectors on the disk, honestly... I've never had a single problem with EFS.

Off the beaten path, but how secure is EFS?

Thrax: I've read that EFS is pretty tight. I've looked around for cracking tools to audit my own encrypted files but haven't been able to find one (brute force or whatever). As far as I know, there aren't any well known exploits to break it.
