The time will soon be upon us when Microsoft releases the newest entrant to their long line of server operating systems. Windows Server 2008, expected some time in 1Q08, is built upon the same technology powering Windows Vista. While Vista itself has been met with great resistance in most enterprise arenas, Server 2008 seems a solid improvement on Server 2003.

Nobody can say for sure how 2008 will be received, as a lot can change between now and RTM, however 2008 has some radical departures from previous Windows releases that may woo some administrators. Most importantly, it has the Unix-like ability to be completely customizable; the UI can be stripped or included just like a package, the entire OS can be administrated from the Windows Power Shell, and most other features behave similarly to the flexibility of the UI.

Beta 3 of 2008 is in circulation now, and Neowin has the goods if you've a key to try it with.
