BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO

This morning, I turned on my computer. After the BIOS load up and the Norton GoBack screen but before Windows XP began booting, I got a BSOD saying "BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO with the stop code 0x00000074 (0x00000003 0x00000002 0x80079000 0xC000014C). I couldn't boot the computer normally nor into safe mode, which I tried a few times. A quick Googlin' yielded Microsoft's tech page, which said that the problem was due to bad RAM. I tried swapping out both the 1 gig stick and the 256 stick and tried switching which slot they were plugged into, but the error persisted.

I think it might be something badly corrupted in the registry, but I don't have an XP disk to reinstall from.

Help me, Icrontic!

I would still run Memtest for a pass or two before I'd entirely dismiss the memory issue.

You could try booting by selecting "last known good configuration" in the boot options. If that fails, you can also see if you can borrow a friends CD- you can still try a recovery without authentication.

Otherwise, I think finding or buying an XP CD is a good idea.
