Problems with Automatic Updates

Hi Guys

Started having issues with the PC a couple of months ago. After booting up and loading windows, the system would just lock up and hang. To cut a long story short, I ran msconfig and turned off two services to get the PC running normally again:

1) Security Centre
2) Automatic Updates

The last thing I remember doing before having this problem was updating my video card driver (NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT).

Anyway, I think it's time I get this fixed once and for all so here goes.
Followed all the instructions in the 'Steps to take before posting a HijackThis log' and cleared a lot of spyware etc. Tried restarting the PC with Security Centre and Automatic Updates enabled and had the same hanging problems.

Oh, I have Windows XP SP2.

1) Here is my HijackThis log:

Hi spaccaRS, and sorry for the delay.

I need to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Does your Norton/Symantec have a Firewall? I can see you have Comodo.

    Hi spaccaRS,
I have tried uninstalling before Norton/Symantec but for some reason there are some some elements of the programs remaining.

As far as I know their internet security features are switched off.
We'll remove Norton. That means you will need to download an Anti-Virus program asap, since your computer is unprotected at the moment.

    Please do the following...

    1. You have several P2P filesharing program installed.
    • Many of these programs come with unwanted components bundled with them.
    • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

I recommend you uninstall all forms of P2P programs via Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

    2. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton AntiSpam
    Norton AntiSpam
    Norton AntiVirus 2005
    Norton Internet Security
    Norton Internet Security

    Norton Internet Security
    Norton Internet Security
    Norton Internet Security
    Norton Internet Security
Norton Internet Security 2005 (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton WMI Update
    Norton WMI Update

    LimeWire 4.12.11 <-- see 1. above
    Morpheus Toolbar <-- Bundles adware.

    3. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool. Follow the instructions on screen.

    4. Please download one Anti-Virusfrom the list below - They are Free!

    AntiVir << I recommend this
    AVG Free Edition
    avast! 4 Home Edition

    5. Find and delete the following Files in RED:

    C:\Program Files\Morpheus\morpheustoolbar.exe
    C:\Program Files\MorpheusBar\bar\1.bin\NPMORPBR.DLL
    C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msimg32.dll
    C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll

Note: If you don't have Morpheus on your computer, then delete the whole folder.

    6. Post a new HijackThis log.

    Hi spaccaRS,

Just one harmless entry to remove...

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    - Click Fix Checked
    Close HiajckThis

    From your previous post...
I also found 1 suspect file during the Virus Scan with AntiVir:
AntiVir only detected Panda files, so there is nothing to worry about.

Apart from that, your HijackThis log is clean. How is the computer?

    Thanks Trogan

Computer seems to be running a lot smoother, thankyou :thumbup

Although I'm still having issues with Automatic Updates.
After turning Auto Update back on, about 30 seconds later my PC locked up and stopped responding. Had to reboot in safe mode, run msconfig and turn off Auto Updates and Security Center. It seems to lock up as the computer tries to check for the updates...

    Any ideas?

I don't have any ideas, unfortunately. I suggesting asking in the Operating Systems forum and see if anyone else has a suggestion.
