ATM card versus Windows XP SP1

Move this thread if I am in the wrong forum.

I have a problem with a friends computer.

I has a ATM adapter installed.
It is used for his present ADSL connection.
He is switching to a new ADSL connection soon that uses Ethernet instead of ATM.

The problem is that the computer stalled during or after SP1 install.
Could this be because of the ATM adapter?
He is using an unofficial driver because the company has only realeased an official Win 98 driver.

He got it up and running after the failed SP1 install.
But his internet connection is not working.
Windows XP reset his settings.
And now the connection cannot be restored.
The option needed for the connection is greyed out.
Even after reinstalling the driver.

Is there any way to reestablish the connection without having to reinstall.

The ATM adapter acts like a modem in Windows XP.

I can provide more information if needed.

BTW. System Restore didn't help.
When I choose a restore point, windows tells me that it cannot restore.

Hardware in the computer
Athlon XP 1800+
ASUS A7V266
512 MB Ram.
Geforce4 MX440
ATM adapter
DVD-rom
DVD-ram

Yup I thought it was very funny as well.
My friend didn't think it was funny.

It runs through the restore process and reports an error after restarting.

Do I have to mention that I have system restore disabled on my rig?
