sound and speakers not workin?

hi, my computer, when i fist got it accepted any speakers i put in, now when i plug them in there is no sound and i get the message that they arent connected properly when they clearly are its bs..can any 1 help me ? thanks.

    What OS? Soundcard? Laptop or Stationary? Have you updated your drivers? Will the speakers work with another device (mp3 player, etc). Are the speakers jack or USB?
