that's a big question. Could we start with the basics?

    What operating system
    what type of internet
Do you have a router or a direct connection to a cable modem, dsl modem, etc?
    Have you called your ISP?
    Who is your ISP?

How can we possibly help you with no information?

Step 1: Call your ISP and tell them you experience frequent internet disconnects.

    Windows Xp
    Cable Modem
    wireless internet
    Cox. net

    I called them and linksys.

Cox blamed linksys and linksys blamed cox.

I have narrowed down the problem to when I am on aim. That is when my internet dropped.

Talk about lack of info... even with the "basics".

Plug in directly to your cable modem and see if the problem persists. If it stops, then it is Linksys's issue, if it continues then it's either the modem or the cable is dropping out. Or it's your computer, not as likely if several computers have the same outage issues.

Have a cable technician check the reverse frequency on your lines, additionally ask them to balance the neighborhood hub. I had used 3 different modems, 2 different routers, and even direct plug in. Internet works 70% of the time, at no particular time, then can randomly stop working, as the cable modems will report a loss of cable signal. Long story short, we had the TW techs out there and found that the reverse frequency which is the spectrum used for data, was way below the threshold for quality and was intermittently dropping signals. My cable tv always works, as he stated that the forward spectrum was good. Found some problems with the wiring in the attic, couple of bad splitters that were not grounded with lots of corrosion, and overall crappy wiring of the house by the owner (Renting).
