Hmm, I have them. The thing is ... the seagate drive is in DMA mode, but the maxtor only shows PIO. Whenever I transfer to that HD or use it for anything, it slows the whole system down. ARG, I guess I'll wait till I get my mobo back from newegg ...

Um, do you have the two HDs on same HD channel??? The Seagate may be a DMA33, the Maxtor wants to be ATA\UDMA\100. It is slow on a 40 conductor IDE cable,and if your Seagate is new it will also be faster on an 80 Conductor but if old needs a 40 conductor. Pair the Seagate with a burner or CD-ROM, give the Maxtor a home with a fast DVD or VERY fast burner, both will be happier. The Maxtor will not be happy on a DMA\33 bus really, that is where it does not slow down quite right and goes to a PIO pure mode. At ATA\100 you do not want forced DMA for the Maxtor, but it will use that if you must. I only use DMA for computers with fast HDs and slower CPUs and RAM,that is why it used to be "the rage" to force DMA but now it is not needed at all on modern boxes. I have had Maxtors fail to install and massively BARF on older computers that want ATA\33 and even some that want ATA\66 or ATA\33. Sorry, you get to reconfig your IDE\EIDE hookups for best results and Split-channel hookup the HDs.
This is one reason why I like Western Digitals, they co-exist with older drives or CD-ROM drives that are more than 2-3 years old much better at UDMA\ATA\33. Note that the oldest CD-ROM drives are UDMA 16 or UDMA 33, and the existence of a MAxtor with one will CRIPPLE it if on same channel (cable is channel for IDE).
if your computer will let you boot off of something like IDe-2 or IDE-3 that is secondary channel IDe boot spec, with 2 master, 3 slave. This might save you boot issues if you want to install an O\S and have to hook the Maxtor to Secondary channel for speed gain.
I have seen this hookup, and the channel reverse of same:
On a real old box, primary channel will be faster than secondary because the IDE channeling was prioritized that way, so Maxtor, if boot, needs to be alone on master, primary and the others as shown (as to master and slave) on secondary IDE channel.
NOTE here, that age determines whether the IDe controller uses CHANNEL or device specification for speed, older comps are likely to run IDe channel (btoh devices on same channel) at speed of slowest device. Comps that are about 5-8 years old will still do this, adn cable helps determine speed (and an ATA\66 device likes an 80 conductor cable better than a 40 channel one). If you bought an Ata\133 Maxtor, it will only be happy on an 80 conductor, 40 pin CONNECTOR cable, as it WILL drop straight to PIO from ATA\66. That is WHY this is happening, but details you get to play with as they will vary with relative age of parts including mobo.
Ageek, the seagate is new .. and the maxtor is ata133. I'll run the seagate primary and the maxtor secondary with the cd-rom slaved. Maybe that will help?
You still shouldn't have any problems even if you do have drives on the same IDE channel. Yes, it may be a tad slower than if you had them on different channels, but it isn't a huge increase, especially if you don't use both drives at the same time...
Reinstall the nForce drivers, then delete the Seagate from device manager and restart.

Find your motherboards model, go to the manufacturers site, download drivers. Tada.
Did you say Cdrom slaved to the maxtor on the secondary channel? DO NOT do that.
Are the harddrives set as cable select or master/slave? If one of them is cable select, i suggest you have the other as that as well and same goes for Master/Slave. Try another cable if you have one. But never mix atapi and hdd on the same cable. Nevar!

Why? I have on all my machines at one point and never had a problem. Infact this machine is right now as I have a HDD and 3 Optical drives.
Even going back to my K6-2 333 I never had any problems. Maybe it was just a certain pack of cables, or certain types of drives together, who knows.....

No, because you cannot read and write on the same IDE channel at the same time (which is why on older machines, trying to burn a disc on the fly from one drive to another on the same IDE channel could cause problems).
I had this saved for ages so I don't remember where I got it from:
Open registry editor. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMS\CurrentControlSet\Control/Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
The Default Value should be "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Go to "0001" key if your device is on Primary IDE Chanel or "0002" if your device is on Secondary IDE channel
and change the MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed or SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed to 0xffffffff depending if your device is master or slave, close registry editor.
Go to device manager select "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and the corresponding IDE chanel go to "Advanced Settings" Tab and Set Transfer Mode to PIO and then to DMA if available again. That's should do it.

Ageek, the seagate is new .. and the maxtor is ata133. I'll run the seagate primary and the maxtor secondary with the cd-rom slaved. Maybe that will help?

My IDE cables are 80 conductor.
All these problems will go away once I get my toasted ASUS board back. And this time I wont use a DELL psu (or is that POS?).
(BTW I didn't buy the Seagate if you were wondering, all I usually buy are WD or Maxtor.)
