HDDVD Drive on PS3

edited October 2007 in Gaming
I've been looking around for this but I figured you guys would be a good resource. I bought a PS3 mostly to act as a media extender which has been perfect. Im now looking to make it all encompassing.

Is there a way to the Xbox HD-DVD drive to work with a PS3? Ideally through its native os, but through linux would work awesome. Although if thats the case I would just run it through my media server and not have to dual boot.

Or if you guys think there will be a possibility of this in the future.

It's not possible, as it requires a device driver that yellow dog Linux does not have. Future support is unlikely as well.

Why would you want a HDDVD drive when you have Blu Ray :) oh I see for those 1 or 2 titles that are only coming to HD DVD :(

But as Thrax said not going to happen anytime soon if ever.

Really? Is it that hard to port the drivers to linux? I don't know whats involved just seems like something that wouldn't be that hard.

What about a way to rip back up my blu-ray discs from the PS3 to my media server?

PS. This because I think blu-ray will end up losing as with all Sony's format wars

The PS3 is also incapable of ripping discs. Secondly, the drivers exist only on Windows, and because they're owned by Microsoft, it's a federal offense to reverse engineer them.

No it not, oh and you can rip movies with the PS3.

The XBox 360 DVD drive does work with the PS3 and Linux.
The PS3's DVD player is hardware locked, and you cannot play DVDs from it. Libdvdcss can't crack the CSS.

Plugging in the XBox360 HD DVD drive is a work around to allow you to play DVDs from within Linux, and to use your PS3 as a dedicated DVD ripper.

Loki047, have you personally ripped DVDs from within Linux using your PS3 DVD drive? If so how? If you haven't personally, do you know of any resources that detail the process?
