Need help with Steam

My "Store" and "Community" tabs show blank white and I can't seem to do anything about it. Normally I wouldn't care because:
a. I'm broke, and
b. I don't have any friends.

But now I'd like to download a demo for a game and some random person has added me to their friend list and I'm kinda stuck for both.

Can anyone help?

EDIT: The recent update for steam didn't fix my problem.

Ah I'm sure you nailed it. All the computers in this house use Firefox as the primary web browser, and all the computers have IE disabled (by my paranoid friend). Whenever you go to open it it says the file is missing... When you go to the folder in Program Files, access denied. I'll bother him about it tomorrow since there's really no reason for all that. We're not stupid.
