I just got a Gateway 4026GZ - Celeron M 350 1.3 GHz - 15" TFT
handed to me,that's always good.
It was left in a house a friend just got and it's missing the hard drive but it got
a xp OS on it at least it had.
I want to check it out without putting alot of $$ into it.
I don't even know if it works, But if I put Ubuntu disc in it will it boot
so I can check it out?
I mean I don't want to get a hard drive if it's dead

    If it booted its alive.

If it turned on without a boot disk and it hit the bios its probably ok.

Try the "deal and trades" forum here for a cheap older ide drive.

I bought two 40gb drives at a computer flea market here in Dallas last week for $15 a pop. Thats reasonable....

It boots but the screen is real dark and have to play with the switch
that the screen push when close to see the screen.
After playing abit the screen comes on and looks ok, so what you think it has a loose connection?

Probably a loose connection but could be a bigger issue. LCD screens on laptops are 50% of their value, so issues with the screen would have me thinking twice about investing in it.

    Thanks for the input :)
But I had to check it out, guess that's why they left it and took
    the hard drive.
