Warped Ziff sockets????

I just got the first board ever that the socket had a noticeable hight spot on it. The chip will rock on the socket if you push on one corner. Is this real bad or will it be OK? I would really like to not have to go exchange it but I am not sure if it is an issue or not. And if I did use it would I want to put pressure on all corners while locking it down. If I do that it puts some pressure on the chip but doesn't seem to hurt it any.

So ????????

I have never seen a warped ziff socket, but I imagine it could cause some problems with connections and mounting the hsf.
To be safe I would get it replaced.

    t1,

    Thanks for the reply!

While I was waiting for a reply and it is also still too early to go back to the store I figured I would intall the chip, HSF, memory and vid card to test on the bench. I held down the chip like normal as I didn't want to flex it then installed the HSF carefully. It works but like you said I will exchange it to be on the safe side.

Is there a thermistor inside the socket? sometimes is set too high causing the rocking effect you described...

Nope, it's the plastic itself. Like t1 said, I've never seen this before. It's an ECS K7VTA3 ver. 8 and doesn't have the springy type thermosistor.

    On a side question

This is a box I am putting together for my in-laws and I got the board bundled with a 2000 Thorton. This board has 2 sets of 3 pin jumpers for the fsb and supports 166 fsb. Out of curosity I hooked up a HD I already had Windows on with the same KT333 chipset so I knew it would run and just disabled all the periferals in the bios. I was recognised as an XP2600 and so far is running along just as sweet as can be. :D

mtg, it must be your lucky day. Sounds like that box will run nice.
Get the board replaced and you will be set.

I would go with the hassle of returning it, rather than risking it frying my motherboard and taking any othe component with it. Never seen a warped socket though, any pics?
