Ram questions

edited November 2003 in Hardware
Ok so I don't know jack about ram.

I'd like a little info so i've created these questions!

1.) Does ram have to be added in equal amounts; like if you have two sticks, do they have to be the same size?

2.) Can you mix ram of different speeds, for example 1 pc2100 and 1 pc2700?

3.) Who makes the best pc2700?

Thanks!

you can mix ram BUT it will only run as fast as the slowest one. Diff sizes not a problem and Corsair, Kingston, or Crucial

If you are going to be overclocking I would go with Hyper X or some XMS from corsair.

    1) Only with older 16-bit PC400-PC1200 RDRAM do you need to install identical memory modules in pairs. SDRAM & DDR SDRAM can be installed in any configuration you like, as long as the motherboard's Memory Controller Hub can support the module sizes.

    2) You can run different speed grades of memory in your PC, but it will only operate as fast as the slowest memoy module you have installed.

    3) Mushkin Enhanced Black High Performance Level II PC2700, rated 2-2-2-5 @ 333 MHz. More information is available at www.mushkin.com

HyperX worked great while it worked, I was able to get to 215 pretty easily. But now something seems wrong with my two 256 sticks because even with high latency timings, I can't get over 180 stable on my NF7 (using the highest volt setting on the memory). TwinMOS seems to work pretty well for some people too?

matching size doesn't matter, unless you are running dual channel.
On SDRAM boards you can get away with almost any mixed configuration.

Matching size doesn't matter on dual channel either.

If you overclock, and both memory modules are capable of achieving the same speed, then the memory will only be as slow as you feel like pushing it.
