Shut Down

I need a little help, I took an old computer that had windows 98 se on it and did the thing over just so my kid can play, I put windows xp on it but now when I go to start and then shut down it olny shuts down to the old screen IT IS SAFE TO TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF so now I have to push the power button to actually turn the computer off. is there a way to change this so when I click on shut down it turns off. Thank you for your help.

    Make sure advanced power management is enabled. The quickest way that I usually get to the settings is to right click on the desktop, go to properties, go to screen saver tab, click power button, and then (i forget), somewhere in there there's a button "Enable Advanced Power Management".

    If that's not there, you may have the wrong HAL installed (this is complicated and beyond the scope of my wakefulness to explain right now), which if that's the case, you're basically stuck pressing the button for now unless you want to completely reinstall XP again.
