new to using more than one web host

edited November 2007 in Science & Tech
ok i'm getting another host to be a slave holder of my sites... this is my first time doing this...
i'm assuming that when i add my other hosts Nameserver as slave to my registrar... when my master host fails the slave takes over, right?

also when i comes to emails... can i add email accounts for the slave host, and will it only take effect when the slave host comes in effect? (i.e. when the master is down?)

cheers

That's the idea. The trick is that it depends on how long your primary is down for. Small outages may not roll over since the dns caches on any computer trying to get there may still be locked onto your primary site info and not roll over to the backup holder fast enough.

I'm not sure how the emails will work since they are tied to MX records. So if you have email's stored on site A and A goes down and then it starts retrieving emails on B, if A goes back online before emails are retrieved off B then those emails will be stuck on B.

Someone may have a better knowledge of this though. Personally I wouldn't bother with trying to have a secondary issolated MX server on a different host, differet mail servers on the same host are fairly common but two seperate providers is unusual in any case I've looked up. Unless you are doing testing or in the midst of a migration.

cool.. thanks... yeah, i'm on a free-hosting service provider and they have been down a few times before so i'm getting another free-hosting provider and thinking of uploading my sites into both of them and putting one as primary and other as slave... just incase another downtime comes up hehe...
