WEP

I have a Belkin54g. For some reason, I can't seem to get WPA working correctly. Is 128 bit WEP sufficient enough for basic protection? The average person wouldn't be able to access my router without the necessary tools?

Thanks.

    Here's my suggestions.
    1) Change the admin password
    2) Pick a unique SSID
    3) Turn off SSID Broadcast
    4) Change the default IP Scheme from 192.... to something different like 10.1
    5) Don't use DHCP unless you have to or at least limit it to only the minimal number of computers that should be accessing it + 2 as a buffer so you don't get IP lease conflictions.
    6) Don't put in DNS settings into your router. That alone will mess a lot of people up should they figure out your wifi network.
    7) Use any encryption method you can get working WPA2 over WPA1 Over Wep 128.
    8) If you are still paranoid specify which MAC address are allowed to connect to your router

That's about as secure as you can physically make it. Personally on my home network I stop at #4. I find encryption doesn't play well with WDS so I don't bother. My network isn't visible to a cursory glance and If either of my neighbours are industrious enough to hack my network I don't care. If someone is physically sitting in my driveway stealing my network connection I've got bigger problems to worry about and different security methods to deal with them.

Now, on my work networks that I set up I do all of the above, except MAC filtering as it's not practical for an expanding network.
