Organizing my Storage
Ok, this is pretty lengthy so I won't be surprised if nobody wants to jump all over this, but I thought I'd ask:
I need to get a new motherboard because my board refuses to acknowledge RAM in the 2nd or 3rd slot. I'm thinking about getting an ABIT NF7-S; they're on sale at Newegg until the 28th. But, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the best way to arrange my hard drives for my uses.
I will have two systems to work with, and if I go through with this, I will have one board to donate to the SMx project .
Storage Goals:
1) I need a safe place to put movies - my old CD-Rs are starting to crap out, and my cheap DVD-Rs don’t inspire much confidence either. So, movies need to not be on RAID 0. My MP3s would ideally also be located on a non-RAID drive, but not they’re not that important.
2) I’m tired of having lackluster access times on my HDs. My current RAID scores are bad, possibly because of my refurb drive. I’d like to have some kind of fast access times for my programs on my main rig, which could be RAID or a fast single drive.
2 Systems:
ABIT NF7-S (main)
EPOX 8kha+ (current main – will be moved to livingroom)
Hard Drives I have to work with:
WD 40gb 2mb 7200 ATA100
WD 40gb 2mb 7200 ATA100(refurb - low RAID scores are making me wonder if it's slower than the new one)
WD 80gb 8mb 7200 ATA100
IBM 13gb 2mb 5400 ATA66
WD 9gb ?mb 10000 SCSI 2
I am considering buying another 80gb WD special edition, or possibly an 80gb Serial ATA drive. I could use Serial ATA RAID on the ABIT (if it supports it) or my Highpoint ATA100 RAID. I’m open to buying any one HD. I may also consider selling a 40gb drive if I no longer need it.
Controllers:
Onboard 2 channels IDE, both boards
Onboard Serial ATA on ABIT (is it RAID?)
Qlogic SCSI 2 Controller (2 Drives supported on cable)
Highpoint RocketRAID 100 (2 Channel) (mediocre RAID scores using two 40gb drives I have)
So, what would be the best way to arrange my drives? It shouldn’t be this hard for me to figure out, maybe I’m just being indecisive. Anyway, any suggestions?
Thanks for sitting through this long post!

As for the rest, not my territory, but I would put the 40s on PATA and the 80 on SATA. That'd leave you nice amount of room for a WD800JD SATA drive.
I think it helped me just to type all this out. At least now my thoughts are a little more organized and I see what I have
Sometimes I just want to get rid off all my computer parts and start all over. Too bad computer parts aren't worth much used.
