Laptop RAM for christmas

Alright so This is probably what im gonna bug my parents for, for Christmas

My laptop is just not cutting it for me, I am constantly running multiple programs at one time: Photoshop, IE, firefox, dreamweaver, recording software
and its always slowing down and freezing

So I decided thats what i will ask for for Christmas, but I know nothing about laptop memory. I want Higher quality ram, not the value crap.... lol

I know that there is two 512mb sticks in the lappy right now, an I think I want about 3gb of ram...... 1gb stick and one 2gb stick.

Can anyone help me out here, tell me which kind to check out, and how much it might cost?


EDIT: actually from searching my laptop online I think its max is 2gb of ram...

    As for what type laptop memory is fairly standard, you have DDR, DDR2 and then just the speeds. Price wise it's more expensive then desktop ram.

    2 gigs 1x2gig of ram is around $95
    2 gigs 2x1gig of ram is around $70

    If your computers is freezing when you're running several programs, you can bet adding more memory won't fix your issue.

    well thanks for the help, its not as expensive as I thought.....

    and its not that my computer actually freezes, its just when im running lots of programs at once I notice that the computer slows down a lot....

    I also think this is part my processor's fault too. Its a AMD turion x2 but its only 1.6ghz, which is kinda upsetting.
