HELP! Uninstalling new version of act! - reinstalling old version

edited November 2007 in Science & Tech
I installed the trial version of the act! 8.0 (latest version), and decided the upgrade is not worth it. I cannot reinstall the old version now - it seems like it is recognizing that somewhere on my computer I still have Act running. Help! I am not a tech guru, but I need access to my older version of act! asap. I currently use XP on one computer and Vista on the other.

Thanks -

Steve

Uninstall the new version. Then go into program files and look for the act folder and wipe it out (make sure you've backed up any files you need to keep first). Then browse your registry for ACT links and delete them.

Then you should be able to reinstall act 7.

That should work - but I trioed it already and it doesn't. I even used a a program that undeletes programs, and applied it to wipe out ACT, but it still did not do the trick. there must be something hidden somewhere indicating that ACT has been installed.

    Thanks -

Does ACT still appear in your Add/Remove programs? I've seen this occur many times when a program's uninstall fails or is not coded to completely remove the app.

If so, I'd recommend using Revo Uninstaller to perform the uninstallation. After you've done that, the program comes up with a "Scan after Uninstall" option. This option highlights anything that the program left behind. Be careful, because it might come up with your ACT data, which you might want to keep. Any other items, such as registry entries, you can remove. After that, the old version may be able to reinstall for you.

    Also check program files>common files
    also Documents and settings>All Suers>Local Settings>Application Data
It's not uncommon for things to be left in there
