If that doesn't help, what do you want to know?
but seriously, what do you need to know about?
We have a folding n00bie
Quick, get him!
Folding @ Home is run by Stanford University. they have what they call a dsitributed processing network.
To get involed, you need two things:
A computer that runs most to all of the time.
An internet connection that the Folding client can use to talk to servers at Stanford.
What I did, in summary, was this:
surfed to:
http://folding.stanford.edu/
and waited a few seconds for the server that answered to direct me to a temp home for the site (they are moving to a new bigger operations area in a new building, in stages, and keeping the distributed network up while doing so).
The server had a bunch of options to offer, and the website lists them on the left side of the screen in your browser. Look on left for a Download option. Easiest choice is the standard Windows client, pick one for your version of Windows. The most known stable client is version 3.24.
Download it, it will come marked with a unique code that is for the downloading machine only. when downloaded (and I stick it on my desktop and move it later, but you can just do what you want with it to keep in case you ned to reload it later (which will not be needed unless the machine you are using crashes for other reasons).
Client will install itself, when you double-click it. Then it will want to go online, and if you have braodband like cable connect you can share the connect while it works, and if you are on dialup I would just let it have all the dialup until it has talked to the server. THEN, best thing to do, once it has started working, is to run the config option you get by rightclicking the little red cog\gear in your taskbar near the clock and choosing configure.
When you get into configure, one tab will have an option for ID and team name. Team short Media is team reg number 93. If I were you, would use an ID other than Clutch, try using Josh- instead (sorry, Clutch! ). Tell it ok. Quit the run by right-clicking the cog again, then tell it quit on the littel menu that pops up.
Go find the Folding@Home folder, probably in a Program Files subdirectory on whihcever HD you told it to install to. Use Start|Find or Start|Search and tell your box to hunt for Folding@home and then double-click the resulting icon in the find results and then double-click the icon that looks like a Red Cog and that will restart the Folding@Home client with the new ID in use. If you do not want to use Find, simply restart your Widnows, it will start by itself. It will continue with the Work Unit it grabbed, and use YOUR ID to report resutls, and Team Short Media and Josh- will get points while Folding gets computer work from your machine's spare time work for Folding@Home.
Simple enough??? If more questions, PLEASE ask, and welcome to folding!
John.
I dont understand what it DOES.
The body has proteins. Proteins "Fold." The folding process determines healthy processes in the body, or unhealthy processes. Proper "Folding" of proteins = healthy. Improper = unhealthy. Misfolding can produce cancers, alzheimers, parkinsons, and a slew of other diseases
That's all we really know.
Using our understanding of the VERY basics of how proteins fold, Stanford made a program that simulates this process on millions of computers across the world. Every day, thousands of statistics pour into stanford to help us understand better how they fold and misfold, so we may eventually prevent or correct misfolding to prevent or aid the fight against disease.
