When opening standard Office files in Vista, it keeps wanting to "verify" the file contents and it takes forever. Is there a way to shut this off?

I've never seen this before. What version of office did the programs originate from and what version of office are you trying to open them in? Also do they have macros?

Im using Windows 2000, but Vista "verifies" lots of different things, esp downloads before opening. Its a time waster for sure.

    The docs don't have macros.....

Are you opening these from emails? I mean if they are just in your documents folder then vista shouldn't prompt you for verification, they are assumed safe. If they are attachments in emails, then yes you will be asked every time you open them.

These are not email attachments, just basic Word files. It also tries to run a virus scan on existing Word files when I try to open them. Its bloody maddening.....

How do I shut this off?

If you have windows defender try turning off it's active defense and see if that makes a difference.

My mom oddly enough was having a similar problem while opening word files and excel spread sheets over a network share. There is an option somewhere in Office that disables the scan. I also had to tell Norton internet security to allow these types of files to be accessed over the network. You wouldn't happen to be using a norton product would you?

Sorry about the delay in reply but I shipped out to Iraq and am just getting connected again. I fixed the problem by uninstalling all Norton stuff and switched to McCafee. All is much better now and I appreciate all the help!

Have a great New Year guys!
