Athlon 64 X2 5000+.... SMP or no?

I know for a fact that SMP is the way to go on C2D, etc.

But I have two "older" dual core CPUs at home - an X2 5000+ and an Opteron 170. Is SMP worth it on these two, or should I stick with the basic client and run multiple instances?

I think the running suggestion is that any true dual core CPU can benefit from the SMP client.

I have the Opteron 170 and have been Folding on it for months (OC'd 2.4-2.7) and it has not blown a single SMP that I can remember and could even do them stock with reasonable margin.

    Sample @ 2.6GHz

    [17:35:16] Completed 345000 out of 500000 steps (69 percent)
    [17:58:18] Writing local files
    [17:58:18] Completed 350000 out of 500000 steps (70 percent)
    [18:21:32] Writing local files
    [18:21:32] Completed 355000 out of 500000 steps (71 percent)
    [18:44:37] Writing local files
    [18:44:38] Completed 360000 out of 500000 steps (72 percent)

Ergo, the 5000+ should have no problem

Even when it's at the stock speed of 1.8GHz my Opteron 165 pushes 700 PPD via Windows SMP and meets all deadlines.

700 ppd so it is missing the preferred deadlines but making the final deadlines

I'm running an X2 6000+ downstairs and it's getting... 20 minute frames? At zero overclock. Also used to run it on a 4800+. They're solid for the SMP, you'll be doing just fine running them.

Absolutely SMP. I started with the 3800+, then a 4600+ to now a 6000+. The deadline was always met. :)

MJ - That's exactly what I get with my 6000+.

Actually, I think I am making most the preferred deadlines but only by a few hours.

Mine has been hitting the times as well, though often just barely.
Even when it doesn't it is still more work and points that running two standard installs.

Over 700ppd on a 2653 sounds about right. The 165 is basically a down-clocked 170- so if you use my numbers:

2.6GHz / 1.8GHz * 23minutes/frame / 60 minutes/hour * 100 frames ~= 56 hours (about 33.3 min/frame)- well under the 72 hours required for SMP preferreds. Unlike Manchesters, Toledo cores have 1MB/Core cache and compute much faster. I think 1.8GHz is could be cutting it close if it has 512KB cache/core, but the 5000+ at 2.6GHz should be plenty enough.

If I got it right, you’d have to drop to under 600ppd to be in trouble on this WU.
