Processes in task manager

edited December 2007 in Science & Tech
I've been looking at them and was wondering if there's a sure fire way to know if they're all OK. I've googled a number of them and some sites say they are legit while others say get rid. This is all very confusing! I have a number of Svchost.exe processes running. Any help would be appreciated.

If you can't get all the info from some of the sites out there like http://www.processid.com/ or http://www.processlibrary.com or just from the GOOG you could just post which processes you are curious about and see what we know about them.

Also, if you are running Vista you can select View>Select Columns and check "Image Path Name" while in the "Processes" tab of Task Manager. This will list the full file path of any running process, which is very helpful.

It is normal to have several instances of svchost.exe

If you familiarize yourself with what should be starting up on your machine via msconfig, the Startup folder, and the Services snap-in there should be nothing you are unsure of running on your own PC.

Also, if you're concerned about what is running, you can always run a HijackThis log and post it in our SVT section for our excellent gurus to pick apart.

Thanks for the help. That process library site looks particularly helpful. :)
