SATA to USB/Firewire

edited December 2007 in Hardware
Hey guys n gals,
I'm looking to buy some device that will let me connect my SATAs via USB or firewire. I'm leaning more towards USB right because i know most computers have them while ieee 1394s are a little more rare (still have to find out if my home PC has the ports).

Now if i go with SATA to USB i'm debating over the 2 types of devices, which i know almost nothing about and am trying to get some advice...

I can buy the cheapie 10 dollar cable that has SATA connectors on one side and USB on the other. OR i can buy the entire external enclosure which start at like 25 bucks and increase from there.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of the two? Is the price difference worth the advantages?

Thanks all

If it's just a temporary thing for testing, then the SATA to USB adapters are fine. If you want a more permanent external drive I recommend getting the case. They help protect the drive better. Specially if you are planning on transporting it around.
