Guidance needed: Group Calendar solution

I do tech support at a large high school --- which automatically implies that any solution needs to be very affordable or free ala open source :D

So with that in mind we are looking for a group calendaring application that could reside on a win2k server (already existing) or on a Linux server. And the client application needs to run on both XP and OS X. Now I'm not fluent on "calendar speak" as far as features -- but the ideal app would easily support different groups or activities. For example:
Admin Group - for just the principle and his staff
School Group - for all staff to use
Sports Group - for all athletic events
etc ......

This is really a "temporary" solution as the district is looking for a district wide solution (this could take up to a year - or more) but meantime we may set up a local solution if there is a app that makes sense - meaning meets the cost target and is easy to install / manage.

I thank you all for your collective help :)

Does your high school have an exchange server?

This might be a bit too simple for you, but have you thought about Google calendars? (calendar.google.com) They do support "private" calendars in which only those invited to it or such are allowed to access it, and they do support grouping that each person can show or hide based on personal preference.

Again, wouldn't be surprised if it's too simple, not as secure, or not as easy for you to use/implement, but it's already cross-platform for you. ;)

Just a thought. Exchange is quality as well. :)

I've used SugarCRM (open source) with great success at various locations
