More sound for free?

I'd like a freeware program which will allow me to increase my volume beyond what the operating system currently allows.

Background:
I'm watching a lot of DVDs on my laptop (Aurora Borealis) at school between classes. Sometimes, I'll run into a DVD that just plays very low. Right now, in fact, I'm watching disc one of Season one of The Dresden Files. Even with the volume all-the-way up, it's very difficult to hear all the details in the show, and sometimes I have to rewind a bit to catch stuff. Most DVDs are fine, this only happens with some of them.

Any thoughts?

If you were on a mac I'd say use Audio Hijack Pro, and pass your output from the movie through Audio Hijack amplify it and then pass it out to your speakers...

For windows, I don't know of anything that you can place inline to do that. What about just getting a set of headphones?
