I should have posted something when I split the thread...
In any event we need a good Intel vs AMD thread every 2-3 months or so. (Intel Sucks! )
If I have money to burn, I'd build a Intel system with an Epox 4PCA3+ mobo and a P4 2.6C. An HPT374 and SATA Raid! I wish the Epox NF2 board had those features!
I just remembered one of my reasons for choosing Intel again. As meaningless as it truly is I'm a big fan of results. I like to see a pretty decent overclock. At the time of my purchase of the 2.4 the only big time AMD overclockers were the 1700+'s and the 2100+'s (I believe). The 2500 Barton's weren't getting huge results at the time. The P4 2.4C's on the other hand were getting overclocking of 1 gig or more in really good results. Hyper Threading also sounded appealing even though I know not many programs can't put it to it's full use. Never the less I'm happy with my purchase and what I got out of it.
meh. As most of you know, I use both. I overclock both. Both are fast. Intel cost a little more, if it's important than truly AMD delivers more bang for buck. AMD has been fastest *overall* for the desktop on multiple occasions (twice? thinking Thunderbird and FX), including currently - as has Intel, more times.
IC-7 looks like a great mobo but I am very happy with P4C800-E Deluxe, it's my best Intel mobo since (insert laughter but true) my Asus P3V133. Haven't owned an Epox, nobody around here will carry them due to horrendous RMA ratio (this from several vendors) - they're reasonably difficult to find in Canada. They have very rarely been the 'enthusiast's choice' over the past few years, tho they do have their fans (hi, Omega).
Having played with the IC7-Max3 motherboard it is definitely a flagship product. As far as the top 3 GHz Intel processor against the 3200+...that horserace is pretty darn close.
In Canadian funny money the 3200+ goes for $449 and the 3.0C 512k 800 FSB Intel product goes for $359. Eek. But the 3.2C GHz 512K 800FSB retails for $529. (ATHLON64 3200+ (2Ghz) 754PIN 1mb Cache Retail $579).
As soon as you start dropping down the GHz scale AMD does manage to pull ahead in the bang for buck department.
