Fuhgeddabout rear-projection

As the world of HDTV shifts towards LED-backlit LCDs and OLEDs, technologies like Plasma hang on for dear life, and technologies like rear-projection take flight with the dodo.

Long a major player in the HDTV market, Sony is often viewed as a premium product, and as such, a move on their behalf is a stronger precursor to a market movement. As such, Sony's recent move to exit the rear-projection HDTV market could spell doom for the technology as a whole.

Sony's forecast for sales on this technology was lowered from 700,000 to 400,000 before the fiscal year's end in March. LCD sales from Sony alone are expected to eclipse rear-projection by more than 20:1, so it's not a great surprise that Sony is abandoning ship.

Aside from the precipitous decline in projected sales, Sony has incurred a $523m USD loss in its TV division, a large sum of which is attributed to sagging rear-projection sales.

Sony shot themselves in the foot by staying with rear-projection and never tried Plasma at all. Look at Panasonic and Pioneer and see what they have accomplished with plasmas. Plasma is still way ahead of LCD when it comes to TV and movies.

Not for long. In 2007, both Samsung and Pioneer, the world's biggest HDTV manufacturers, declared their R&D budget would be in favor of LCD 2:1.

Well sure, you'd be dumb not to in today's market. Isn't it more expensive to make a 72'' Plasma than it is a LCD?
