Laptop semi-dead

My Gateway M520 Laptop was running pretty strange, wouldn't start up right. Knowing that there was nothing of value on it I began to run the restore DVD on it and it would never finish. I had read that I should check the CMOS battery so I did and changed it out. While I had the laptop open I blew out any dust that was evident. Upon putting it back together and trying to run the restore, the disk spun, the fan came on, and then nothing happened. I am also unable to shut it off without disconnecting the battery and AC power. Anybody have any ideas on where I should go with this?? All replies appreciated, thanks.

That's a tough one... There could be a ton of things that could make your laptop not work correctly. Try hooking up an external monitor to see if maybe the LCD is not receiving a signal.
