just a check-up, and some minor problems

Hi all.

I'd like to begin by thanking you for time and time again being helpful and patient with my various computer problems. I'm afraid I could use your assistance once again.

I've been having some minor problems, that I admit, may not even be related to malware at all, but I'd like to be as safe as possible from such threats. So, here goes.

1. My internet connection has been resetting itself often (and resumes after an interval of a couple of minutes). I believe this has to do primarily with my internet services provider, but it might have some value as a symptom, so I thought I'd mention it.

2. I was reading a pdf file recently, of "dubious" content and origin. Don't ask. The thing is, while I was viewing that pdf, I get a pop-up from Adobe Reader that the pdf file is actively trying to connect to a site related to the contents of the pdf, which is something I didn't want to do. Anyway, at that moment, I panic and hit the reset button.

3. Then, right after that, I reboot to Windows and can't see one of my HDDs. I reboot several times and still I can't see it. I shut down my pc for half an hour and after that, I can now see the HDD again and everything returns to normal.

Well, these were the problems/symptoms; nothing too serious, I think. But I'd really like your opinion on my computer's health.

As for this thread, I'll now be doing the '8 Steps' and posting the results of each step in this thread and finally post a fresh HJT log.

Thank you for your time.

    step 1 - atf cleaner - done

step 2 - ad aware 2007 - No critical objects found

Spybot search and destroy - no 'red' / critical entries found

spywareblaster - already installed and fully updated

    To be continued...
I'll keep doing these steps and adding updates as fast as my schedule allows and finally I'll post the HJT log.

And a (perhaps unnecessary) view of the Task Manager and its Processes tab.

First screen capture shows the processes by decreasing CPU use:

    01kf5.th.jpg

and the second shows them by decreasing Memory Use:

    Hello Fontas,

The HijackThis log is clean. The online scans only found items in system restore, which you can clean by doing the following...
    • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
    • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
    • Close the Help and Support Center box.
    • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
    • Select (C: ) then click OK.
    • Click the More Options tab.
    • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Apart from that, everything looks fine.

I did that. For some reason, I had been very worried, so... one last HJT log, if I may...?

    Hi Fontas,

HijackThis log is clean, but there is one harmless entry that can be removed.

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    - Click Fix Checked
    Close HiajckThis

Your computer is clean and is pretty secured. :)

Thank you very much for your time and effort. I really appreciate it.

If you'd like, you can lock and move this thread to 'resolved'.

    Thanks again.
