5.1 surround question (Xbox 360)

My friend recently got a pretty cool speaker setup complete with a receiver, but I'm a bit confused as to whether it's actually putting out 6 channels.

Here's the thing: It's hooked up with the red and white RCA cables that are standard to the AV cord that comes with the console, but I was under the impression that for the 360 to put out 6 channels you had to use the optical output on the back. The receiver doesn't have this input.

So my question is, even though there's sound coming out of all the speakers and it sounds great, is it really 5.1?

Likely not. I would imagine if you listened closely the front and rear speakers are running in stereo mode. Which means that your front right and rear right are putting out the same sound, same with front left and rear left. True 5.1 will have 5 seperate audio channels plus the sub. As I understand it that's only capable through the optical hook-up from the xbox.
