Media Player too dark

Someone screwed around with something and now whatever I watch on the media player comes out a lot darker than what it looks like before I watch/download it. If I adjust my video card settings (gamma) while a video is playing it fixes the problem but only until I close out the player and open another movie or music video.

Check/reinstall the necessary codecs, and/or reinstall the vid drivers. I've had something like that, and using the wrong codecs can do all kinds of messed up things.

Use GSpot to find the codecs you need if you don't know what they are.

I rolled back the player to its original version that came with XP, that didn't seem to fix the problem: however I can change the player settings which I must now do to brighten everything up every time I open the player.

I'm gonna hit up GSpot and get back to ya.

    Edited for spelling.

Haha. Open the app, open up a Windows Explorer window, and it's as easy as dragging the file name onto the box at the top left corner. Then all you're looking for is the required audio and video filters, and it'll tell you if they're installed or not. Making sense of it yet?

Ok, I saw the newbie guide on the site.

Is there a way to make a text file report? I'm not seeing it in any of the options up top.

The first 3 boxes under the video section say the following:

    Codec: WMVA
    Name: WMP v10 (VC-1 Beta)
    Status: Codec Status Undetermined

Not sure if you have an Nvidia card but sometimes with these the video settings will be changed for no apparent reason. If you do have an nvidia card, try going into the control panel and find the 'adjust video color settings' option. In this if its not at the defaults try setting them to default. Other than that I have no suggestions.

    NVidia 7800GS

What you suggested is exactly what I do each time I close out and open the player, specifically the gamma settings. The default setting just keeps the video darker than normal.

Man, I've seen this before, and I can't for the life of me remember what I did to fix it. Sorry, bud. I keep coming back to the codecs and the driver.

I had this issue once on my 7950GX2, except everything was overbright. I uninstalled the drivers and gutted it with a driver cleaner. Solved!

Would this be like uninstalling the drivers that came with the CD and reinstalling them?

Edit: Did this and it worked. Media players picture is back to normal :D
