No program finds anything, but the computer isn't alright

I've had some problems with my computer. For example, trouble to turn it off (Windows simply refuses to close down totally by itself so I have to turn the computer off the harsh way), strange behavior (once when I had ben away for a while, it had right-clicked on the desktop (though on the My Computer icon, bu still wiith the options you get by right-clicking on desktop). Simply unnatural and strange behavior. I've scanned with four programs, Avira AntiVir, a-Squared, Spybot and Kaspersky Online Scanner. Nobody found anything, except that Spybot found some benign cookies, which were removed without problems.

Here is a HJT log, please tell me what is wrong with my computer.

    Hi Calypze,

The log is clean of malware.

I see references to Norton/Symantec. When was this uninstalled? You are no longer using this, correct? Please let me know.

Thank you. So maybe it's Vista instability that is causing problems?

Yes, I don't use Norton anymore. I think I uninstalled it back in May or early June.

I'm not sure what the problem is; I've not used Vista yet. You could ask in the Operating System forum and see if anyone has an idea.

Regarding Norton, download and run the Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions onscreen.

Let me know how it goes.

I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool, and the process apparantly worked alright. No problems in sight.

I'm afraid I've actually got some problem from it. I can no longer update Avira AntiVir. When I click to update, nothing happens. I know AntiVir isn't from Norton, but running the Norton Removal Tool and this problem occurring is the only connection I can think of. Or do you maybe have some other idea of what it might be?

It's definitely not the Norton Removal Tool. I use Avira and get the same problem from time to time. Give it some time and the update will complete. I know it can be frustrating.

Well, that's good to hear. But the problem is that the update window doesn't even appear. When I click to update, there is no reaction, except for the Vista loading ring that quickly disappears again.

This kind of thing has never happened to me before. There have ben instances when there was hard to get updates downloaded, but then they were started, and the program at least attempted to.

I don't know what would be causing the problems with Avira. I've used the Norton Removal Tool countless times and have not heard it to cause any problems.

Restart the Desktop and see if that makes any difference.

Restart the desktop? I've restarted the computer several times since, still the same problem. AntiVir notes that "Job started" in the events though, but as I said nothing happens.

Or is there any special way of restartitng the desktop that is different from restarting the computer?

No special way. The same way as usual.

Hmm, do you have Windows Vista? I have it, and it appears that (at least for Vista), the Norton Removal Tool removes a part of Windows that is essential for the AntiVir updater to work. Please see this thread.

What do you think? It seems almost unbelievable, why should removing Norton require a part of Windows to be removed, and what else might get errors if that part is removed? But there seems to be such a connection after all.

Oh, I never knew that. :(
