Modem upgraded - Router Issues

edited January 2008 in Science & Tech
Comcast upgraded my Modem because I added their VoIP service. Now my linksys router seems to be lost or not familiar with the new modem.
Comcast's installer said if I reset the router it would be fine but I tried that and doesn't do anything. I guess I need to change some settings but not sure what to change, anybody have any ideas? I just totally bypassed the router at this point since I can't figure out what else to try.

The new modem that was sent to you, is it just a modem or is it a router as well? That seems to be the most common situation once they throw voip into the mix.

That will change everything if that's the case. You need to reconfigure your linksys router to look to your new modem/router as the gateway then all your connected computers would look to the linksys as their gateway and you have essentially two networks now.

This is of course only if the new device is a combo modem/router.

Wow, that would make sense if it were a modem also, I never thought of that. I'll have to check that this pm when I return, it would have helped if the installer could have mentioned that. I bet that is what the deal is, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
