Titan Quest graphics problem

GH, Zan, Crazy Joe, and I purchased Titan Quest (on steam) to play through co-operatively.

Joe is having a graphics issue, however, and we need help finding a solution. All of his drivers are up to date, as is DirectX, and he's even changed his graphics card (to the one from hotrodsun), so it's not a gpu incompatibility.

The problem is this: In-game, his avatar only shows up as floating hair.

He can't move or interact with anything other than the menus.

Obviously, we can't play that way.

We need help finding a solution, either by a suggestion of more troubleshooting steps that we maybe haven't tried yet, or if someone with better google sense than I have could find the solution online (I've found several mentions of the issue, but no solutions yet).

Thanks.

Someone please help Joe. He has the strangest luck with finding obscure computer problems.

One more of these "Joe's the only person in the world with this issue" problems and I'm going to have to tell the guy to buy a Mac.

then his only problem will be he can't play any games ;)

If it's an ATI GPU with ATI drivers pack. (You didn't mention card type.)
My ATI card was crashing in all my games including TF2.
I moved back to the 6.6 ATI driver & catalyst pack after completely removing all the ATI drivers and catalyst programs.
Here's the thread on it... It has all the links to driver and catalyst packs.

    He went from a GeForce 5700LE to a 7800GS.

I honestly don't think his issue is graphical in nature, it seems to me that it's a problem with the character model. He can see the rest of the game, but his character model does not appear (aside from the hair) and the character cannot move.

    Run chkdsk?

Might have to delete the local game content and download/install again. I wouldn't suggest that until you've exhausted other alternatives (takes a while to download).

I bought the Titan Quest combo pack a few months back--fun game  Brings back lots of fond Diablo 2 memories :)

You might want to assign more memory in BIOS of your physical RAM for use by the video card.
It's a texture memory runs out thing.
Seems this game requires 256 MB on the video card.
According to some gamers, you need 256 or set the bios on 128 MB card systems to use more physical ram. And they set it to 128 MB.
Seems some have got by with it set to that.
Couldn't hurt to try. You can always set it back to original settings.

How do I do that? I've looked in Bios but I am unable to find the setting to change...

It should be under graphics aperture size or AGP aperture in BIOS.

    GH is correct.
    What MB do you have?
Some are automatic on that setting and set it according to the graphics card amount of ram.
Therefor they wouldn't have an adjustable setting on it.
    Most do have it though.

Well all the settings are correct, I tried to run 3DMark and it gives the following error before the first feature test:

    IDirect3DDevice9::Present failed: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)

    Any ideas?

Device is not staying persistent, or the driver isn't remaining loaded is my guess..Ever experience your desktop flashing for a second?

The problem was actually with F@H... Apparently 3DMark doesn't like to run with F@H running...

So I ran it successfully and I got the following results on 3DMark

    Score: 2733
Below is the result details of your submitted project.
    Main Test Results
    3DMark Score 2733 3DMarks
    SM 2.0 Score 1248 Marks
    SM 3.0 Score 1198 Marks
    CPU Score 683 Marks

    Detailed Test Results

    Graphics Tests
    1 - Return to Proxycon 9.967 FPS
    2 - Firefly Forest 10.83 FPS

    CPU Tests
    CPU1 - Red Valley 0.216 FPS
    CPU2 - Red Valley 0.344 FPS

    HDR Tests
    1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 10.632 FPS
    2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 13.323 FPS

Do these levels seem right for my new 7800GS?

I played titan quest with that card. I did it with a Pentium4 3.0E with 1gb of ram. I played at 1280x1024 with mid level of detail. Did you try patching the game, get the newest video, chipset, and sound drivers? Also something that was already mentioned try uninstalling and reinstalling the game then update/patch. Also try reinstalling directx. Lastly if you are OCing? try backing off on your OC then try running the game again.

I downloaded it from Steam, so not too much I can do about patching it and such... I am not overclocking it at all... The game had the same issues for me with my old card so I don't think it's an issue with the video card... I think the texture files were corrupt or something in the steam download...

Then delete the game, and redownload it.

You can check the game's cache within steam. It'll "verify" the game files.

I thought that only worked for games packaged in GCF files...

That's correct. I have checked my game cache files within Steam a few times now.
I've been searching for fixes and have also seen where people have completely deleted (Driver Cleaner & Driver Sweeper) the newest drivers and reverted back a couple of versions and it worked for some, but not all who had video problems of different sorts.

From everything I have seen or heard, this game has been really bad for low-mid range video cards. Part of it is how the game is coded (which is sub-par for graphics compatibility)just lends itself to glitches and bugs.

On a brighter note, when did you guys get the game? I have like 5-6 characters 1 of which is trekking through on legendary (hardest difficulty I think?) I would totally run your characters through if you want or share some of the swag I have stored up.

You misunderstand.... We would like to 'play' the game, not smash it. ;)

As an update: redownloading the game a third time fixed the issue Joe was having, so we can play now.

well what I was referring to is getting rid of my crap so I don't have to have my characters hold onto it any longer

anyways glad you got working. Game reminded me of Diablo 4, whenever that comes out.

No, I do. I've got a motherboard with a short in it. If I put a piece of tape behind the board where the short is, it works.
