While VIA chips aren't terribly robust in terms of media performance, they do really very well for embedded applications, low-bitrate MPEG2/4 decoding, and as firewalls. Piggybacking on this notion, VIA has introduced their Network Appliance Board ("NAB") with four GigE ports, with three running on the PCIe bus for great bandwidth. It's a neat novelty item, and you should take a look.
