Are you looking for free or commercial one? Avira AntiVir is the one I can recommend as I am using it myself. PersonalEdition is very good, and Premium version is even better. But I think this is more a matter of opinion. There are many good antivirus out there. Take the one you find convenient and reliable.
To prevent issues, get good antivirus and firewall. Both are needed (and usually it is not recommended to use the windows build in firewall). Remember keep your Windows and other softwares up to date. This is imperative! Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released. Then you might want to consider a backup program like Acronis True Image. It will save your day if something goes wrong or you get infected.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Please not that Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser. There are safer and better alternatives available like Opera and Firefox.
Install HOSTS file and IE-SPYAD.
Another good program is MVPS HOSTS. This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 malicious sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. See this tutorial by Grinler.
And finally, to prevent malware issues use the common sense. Do not click or open everything; do not surf everywhere.
hey i did that MVP host thing i dono what it did. just said updated press any key to continue and thast that. theres no removing option? or any options? what exactly did it do?
i wna remove that thign its buggin my IE. it has a FAQ on it and also on one of the problems (the back button doesnt do anythign at times on IE) but it doesnt say how to fix this issue. HOw can i remove this program thing?
Hosts is a small file placed into the directory C:\Windoes\System32\Drivers\Etc Normally it contains only a few lines information. Now, the Hosts file can be used to block stuff, like bad sites, ads, coocies, hijackers, and that is what MVPS HOSTS file will do. It replace the original file with its own one.
To restore original Hosts file, please download HostsXpert to your Desktop.
Right click the HostsXpert.zip folder, and select Extract All to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop.
Open that folder and double click HostsXpert.exe to run the program.
Click Restore MS Hosts File, and OK to prompt. Original Hosts file is now back.
once i click ok to the prompt its all taken care of?
nice man thanks, it worked. even some sites the ads wouldnt show up with that mvp host. thanks alot !
