1700+ 0310XPMW -or- Barton 2500+

I purchased the T-Bred(B) 0310XPMW DLT3C from ExcaliberPC. Ordered it less than an hour ago, along with an Abit NF7-S Rev2.0 and I bit the bullet and got the SLK-900U also. All total, including shipping and the discount, it was roughly $240. Oh well, it's only money! :)

Should I get an T-Bred(B) 1700+ 0310XPMW DLT3C, or a Barton 2500+?

I don't have exotic cooling, so I want something that will overclock very high w/ air cooling. I know the 1700+ CPUs are getting 2.3GHz and higher on air, what are the Bartons getting? Also, I don't like to take the VCore very high . . . 1.65v is where I'd like it to be @ 2.3GHz, so if I'd need something like 1.8v for 2.3GHz on a Barton then I'll get the 1700+.

Any information/links you can provide would be helpful.

    The 1700+ will get you to 2.3 on 1.65 if it's a DLT3C. The Barton won't.

Whats wrong with 1.8? My AX7 can take 1.8 from my palomino at ~45C. Palominos are worse at cooling than Tbred or Bartons. And a SK7 is prolly better than an AX7 or even better yet an SLK700 or SLk800 or SLk900.

The more volts the shorter the life of the CPU. Also, the more volts the more heat that has to be carried away from the CPU. If I can get 2.3 @ 1.65v rather than 1.8v that's less heat I have to pull away from the CPU.

I'm not sure if I'll buy a new heatsink or not . . . I really like the SLK-900U, but my Alpha PAL8045 isn't bad either.

What do you consider "sucky?" PC2100? PC2700?

If PC2100 then just up the multiplier to like 17.

    If PC2700 use like 13.5

That is, if your board supports those multipliers.

1.85v shortens the life from a projected 20 years, to a projected 15.

PC2100...doesn't have that multiplier setting :(

At least I doubt it, didn't really look, I think it caps out at 12.5...KR7A-R

I don't know for fact, but I thought the expected life of a processor was roughly 10 years. I don't know what percentage of the life .2v would take off the CPU, but there's no doubt it adds heat, which also makes it more difficult to cool.

Besides, we're talking maybe any extra 100-200MHz extra by upping the VCore to 1.85. Doesn't seem worth it to me. If we were talking 500 extra MHz then that's different. I'd run 1.85v if I could get a T-Bred(B) to run 2.8GHz, so long as I had adequate cooling.

(Where did you get your numbers? Any links?)

look up the specs for the ECS L7S7A2 ($54 from NewEgg). It should have multiplier adjustments but I don't know how many.

I just purchased 2 of these today from NewEgg for a couple DUT3Cs I have.

Since these are DUT3Cs, and the RAM I'm going to use in that board is PC2700 then it really doesn't matter if the board has high multipliers because I'll use 166MHz FSB and DUT3Cs don't overclock all that well, so even a low multiplier like 12.5 will probably be more juice than these CPUs can handle.
