Folder which will not delete!

Right, downloaded something from a newsgroup (some eBook thing)

Obviously this makes a folder on my hdd - so I go in to the folder, extraxct the book - move the pdf to my 'ebook' folder on another drive - delete everything in the original folder - just left with an empty folder.

I cant delete it, or rename it - very odd behaviour too - If I try to rename it to say 'test' it will create a new folder called test and the original one will be recreated!!

I've tried to press delete, right click delete, drag to the recycle bin, shift delete it, use process explorer and search for part of the folder name - 'find handle' etc to then try to kill a handle but it doesnt find one.

Rebooted - still the same problem

Looked in to the properties for the folder too, I have permissions etc - its set to read only, I unticked that - press delete - then it goes, then a second later it recreates its self?!!!

Any ideas - its driving me crazy!!

This tool lets you ignore error messages, say if you delete it and it tells you this can't be done, right click the message, select close and it will delete it anyway. Very powerful tool, use with caution.

Might be time to run a spyware scan and a virus scan. Also might want to post a Hijackthis log in the spyware section. Sounds like spyware/malware to me.

I had a process which was a virus that I couldn't close, so I got pointed to this tool :D It's awesome. Never had any problems with it other than it being too awesome to handle :P

OK so I got fedup with this and tried the unlocker - it didnt find any handles (same as process explorer) so I chose the delete option, it promptly told me it was deleted, alas, it was not :(

    Try this
    • Logg into "Safe Mode". (at XP start press F8).
      Note,
Immediately at start of XP you have to press the key F8 (several times), to get into safe mode.
If you are too late pressing F8, the system will not startup in safe mode

    • Choose "Safe mode" in the menu.

    • Logg in as Administrator.

    • Select directory (or the file) and choose "properties"
Start -> My Computer -> Point on the folder -> Mouse-right-button -> properties

    • Enter tab "Security"

    • Under "Permissions for Administrators" -> Advanced.

    • Enter tab "Owner".

    • Select the top field "Administrator ( xxx-yyyyy\administrator)"

    • Select "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"

    • Press Apply.

    • Press OK.

    • Now you should be able to delete the folder ..

I've sorted this now thanks :)

Luckily the folder was within another folder, not on the route of the drive - I moved the contents of the folder except this one folder I wanted to delete - then deleted the folder it was in - which seemed to work.

Not sure exactly why it wouldnt delete, however, the FOLDER name did end in .zip so I'm not sure if vista got confused and thought the folder was an empty zip file or what - anyhow, its gone now!

Thanks for the input people :D
