Windows XP SP1 problems

I am back again.
I have problems with the computer that used the ATM adapter again.
It isn't mine fortunately.

After having installed Windows XP SP1.
The computer stops doing anything, you can move the mouse though. This is after 20 minutes of waiting.
No icons appear on the desktop and no taskbar appears either.

The atm card is not in the machine anymore.

Specs:
Asus A7V333
Amd Athlon XP 1800+
512 MB PC2700 Ram
80 GB Maxtor
80 GB Western Digital
Lite-on dvd
Asus dvd/r
Generic 10/100 Realtek network adapter.

Newest Hyperion driver is installed
The problem was present with other versions of the chipset driver as well.

Additional question:
After this borked SP1 install the Internet connection on the machine died.
All settings appear to be correct and the proper drivers are installed as well.

Any other way to get the internet connection back. without having to reinstall?

I performed a system restore after the failed SP1 installation.
Everything seems to work apart from the internet connection.

    Happens a lot http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5bLN%5d;329441

You will have to navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP and delete the folders numbered 25 & 26, then reboot and your problem will be fixed.

Since you can't put SP1 on there for some reason.

    Thanks for the advice.
I am looking forward to see whether or not it will work.

    I see.
The changes to the registry database did the trick though.

I still do not know why SP1 could not be installed on that machine?

If you have gotten all the critical updates I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe the next time you do a clean install you will be able to apply SP1 and the rollup. It sure cuts down on downloading off of windowsupdate.
I don't know anything about your mobo but there might be a Bios upgrade that would help or a chipset upgrade. If you only knew what was causing it to fail in the first place. If you are OCing maybe take it back to defaults for the upgrade. Lots of variables. Good luck. Glad you can get back on the internet.

I am not the one having the problem.
My SP1 install works just fine.
It is a friend of mine.

I think my next step will be a slipstreamed SP1.
It is not oc'ed it has never been oc'ed.
