Cannot Retrieve Data on External HD

I have a good portion of my life on my external HD. I safely removed it and my buddy stuck it in the USB port on his iMac. An error message popped up and when I went back to my laptop the computer recognizes its there, but when I click on the drive letter in My Computer, it says the drive needs to be formated. Ug.

Is there a way to get at the data or am I screwed ?I know there are some data/drive recovery programs out there. Any recommendations?


BTW Im in Iraq which is why I dont have it backed up........
