Black/No monitor screen after upgrading DDR-400

edited January 2008 in Hardware
Hey guys,
I've got a problem when I tried to upgrade my gf's PC as surprise, the computer is about 3 years old and is in pretty good state (or was)... I bought DDR 400, 512mb.
The PC had a 256mb in slot 1. I plugged in the 512 in slot 1 and the old 256 in slot 2. Then when I pressed the on button it started up booting like normally (at least it sounded like) but no screen appeared, after a bit (too short to be booted) the red light (harddisc connectionlight) stopped but no green 'on' light appeared.
I was shocked :P, because I never seen something like that before. So I turned off the PC, took out the slot and put it back in original state, then it still didn't work...

I tried a few 'I don't know what to do'-things:
- different videocard to see if old one is damaged.
- different monitor to see if the old one magical broke at the same time.
- unplugged the motherboard batterij, waited a few min, plugged it back in.

None of them helped...
It's ok if the update didn't work, I could just go back to the store, but if nothing works, that's horrible....

Does anyone have an idea of what I can do?

greetz,
Rig

Did you try it with the old stick back in it alone?

    Yeah I did,
that's what surprises me the most, that it totally didn't work anymore...
