Old drivers

If I've got a really cool toy, for which the latest drivers are for ME, is there any third party program (or any other way) that will allow me to run that device in XP?

    What about compatibility mode?

Probably a silly question, have you tried plugging it in and seeing if XP has them built in?

Yes, and I've tried loading the ME drivers to see if XP will use them.

    What is compatability mode?

Compatibility mode allows you to emulate a 2000, ME or 98 environment for an app. Doesn't apply to drivers.

If you really want this toy to work your best bet may be to install win98/me inside of vmware on that machine. But then the question is, if the effort of doing that is worth the benefits of the toy.

You might want to check out if it's supported under a 3rd party software. I use the paid version of Intelliremote to get my old SB Live! remote working on a modern XP machine.

Any idea how I could find out?

I just checked, Intelliremote doesn't support it. You might have better luck with some of the other weird remote softwares like Girder, etc. There's always lirc on Linux though so I wouldn't throw it away.
